Think practicality.

Ask what will happen on this floor.

Who is walking across it, how often how many? Are animals a factor? Are the kids in here? Do you want to roll around on it

The answers will give you an idea of what is realistic as a choice.

For example luxury velvet pile carpet in the palest pastels are not a great idea for a busy hall.

There is a wealth of choice in carpets, in matting, in woods and stones and tiles and rubber and fantastic finishes look at Amtico products for example.

Once an appropriate choice is made regarding the medium then its down to colour and style.

Rugs can also play an important part. If you chose a wooden or tile floor for example you can create areas around on the rugs where you can still play with the kids or lie and watch telly on the floor without it feeling hard or cold and uninviting.

Rugs can change the look from subtle and classic to bold and stylized.

They are indispensable and you are spoilt for choice of designs and colours and materials. And then of course you can design your own if you spend a bit more.
