It is very important to create interest by mixing textures together. It is imperative if you have a room with little variety in terms of colour or pattern.

It is the combination of textures that makes the difference. A mirror, and the glass and metal of pictures can add shine to an otherwise matt surface.

Soft textured cushions can enhance the stark feel of leather and so on.

Remember it's trial and error with bits and pieces to get the right look . It can be fun. You can move things about from room to room. Experiment  with your own bits and pieces before you actually buy.

A very rough rule of thumb. The more rough the more rustic, the more smooth the more modern.

There are the practicalities of texture too, like towels are better soft and fluffy while tiles are hard and shiny. Floors can be soft and fluffy or hard and shiny but should never be slippery. You know- that kind of thing

Rough | Smooth
